Come Home to Your Body Wisdom | Author Interview Series Chapter 0 | Britta Jo interviews Chandra Zas
Have you ever felt disconnected from your body, as if it were speaking a language you couldnโt understand? Many of us are taught to ignore our bodyโs subtle cues, pushing through exhaustion and overriding our intuition. Weโre told to โfinish our plateโ even when weโre full, or that weโre โtoo sensitiveโ when we express our emotions. This early conditioning can lead to a lifetime of self-doubt, confusion, and a feeling of being at war with ourselves. But what if there was a way to come home to your body, to learn its language, and to trust its profound wisdom?
In a recent, deeply insightful conversation, I had the honor of being interviewed by the amazing Britta Jo for our Handbook for Human Potential author series. We journeyed into the heart of my Chapter Zero, โCome Home to Your Body Wisdom,โ exploring the path of rebuilding that sacred trust with oneself. This wasnโt just a repeat of the chapter; it was an expansion, a sharing of stories and a deepening of the practices that make this work so life-changing.
The Wake-Up Call: When the Body Speaks Loudly
My own journey into body awareness didnโt begin from a place of vibrant health. From a very young age, I was normalized to feeling unwellโbloating, chronic headaches, eczema, and asthma were my constant companions. It wasnโt until a friend dared me to go vegan for two weeks at age 15 that I experienced a profound shift. On day ten, I woke up and feltโฆ different. The headache was gone. The bloating had vanished. The world seemed brighter. It was a powerful realization: the food I ate was directly connected to how I felt. This was my first real taste of what holistic health could mean, and it sparked a lifelong quest to understand the food-mood connection and learn how to feel better in my own skin.
This experience taught me that sometimes, the bodyโs whispers turn into shouts when we refuse to listen. For many, itโs a health crisis that serves as the turning point. For me, it was the sudden relief from chronic symptoms that opened the door to a new way of living.
Befriending Your Inner World: Emotions as Messengers
One of the most transformative steps in coming home to your body is changing your relationship with your emotions. We often treat feelings like anxiety, sadness, or anger as problems to be solved or silenced. But what if we saw them as messengers? As Britta and I discussed, emotional intelligence begins with the understanding that our emotions are simply information. They are a vital part of our internal guidance system, pointing us toward what needs our attention.
โEmotions should be seen as messengers, not problems.โ
When we learn to befriend these uncomfortable emotions, we can start to understand what theyโre trying to tell us. This practice is central to healing from childhood conditioning and developing healthy self-soothing techniques. Instead of reaching for coping mechanisms that numb or distract, we can learn to offer ourselves compassion and conscious choice.
The Art of Self-Love: A Simple, Powerful Question
During a summer I spent at a raw food detox center, I stumbled upon a practice that became a cornerstone of my healing. I spent the entire summer asking myself one question, over and over: โIf I were my own lover, what would I do?โ
This simple mantra became my guide. If I were my own lover, would I stuff myself with food past the point of fullness? Would I push past exhaustion, or would I allow myself to rest? This question was the doorway to feeling my own โyesโ and โno.โ Itโs a practice of deep self-care and self-compassion that can help you reconnect with your intuition when you feel lost.
From Demands to Requests: Transforming Your Relationships
This inner work naturally extends to our relationships with others. We explored the powerful shift that occurs when we learn to make requests instead of demands. A demand comes from a place of expectation and control, often creating friction and resistance. A request, on the other hand, is an invitation. It comes from a place of vulnerability and respect, honoring the other personโs autonomy. Learning this distinction is key to healthier communication and setting loving boundaries.
The Ultimate Gift: The Clarity of Body Knowing
So, what does coming home to your body truly make possible? It makes body knowing possible. This is the profound, unshakable clarity that cuts through self-doubt, indecisiveness, and confusion. When you are connected to your body, you have an internal guidance system that is uniquely yours.
โI want to trust my body again.โ
This doesnโt mean youโll never face challenges or pain. It means youโll be able to navigate lifeโs twists and turns with a deep sense of presence and trust in yourself. As we discussed in the interview, this state of nervous system regulation is essentialโas one expert put it, โsafety is a nutrient.โ When our bodies feel safe and regulated, our digestion improves, our stress levels lower, and our intuition becomes clearer.
This is not a destination, but a journey. It begins with the simple, radical act of accepting where you are right now with kindness and compassion. That is the most powerful healing balm you can offer yourself.
