How You Can Connect to AND Reclaim Your Body Wisdom

I was on autopilot, seeking a little distraction from lack of sleep and the radical adjustment of parenthood. “I’m just checking this one thing,” I’d tell myself as my daughter nestled in my arms. But my body wisdom knew better. There was a hollow feeling in my chest, a disconnection I couldn’t ignore. When I stopped distracting myself and started listening to what my human body was telling me, I realized I was stealing presence – from her, and from myself.
This seemingly small moment became a profound turning point. It wasn’t just about putting my phone down; it was about recognizing a pattern of disconnection that had been quietly running my life. It was about waking up to the subtle ways I was choosing distraction over presence, numbness over feeling, and external noise over my own inner wisdom. It was a pivotal moment where I understood that my body was speaking to me, and that I had the choice to listen.
In our current world of endless information and quick-fix solutions, it’s easy to lose touch with our body wisdom. We are conditioned to look outside of ourselves for answers, to follow the latest trends, and to ignore the subtle signals of our own bodies. Many of us are taught to override our hunger cues with diet plans, to avoid our emotions with distractions, and to push down our pains with alcohol. But this way of living comes at a cost. It leaves us feeling disconnected, unfulfilled, and out of sync with our own bodies and lives, impacting our overall quality of life.

The Pathway Home: Honoring Your Body’s Signals

The pathway to embodiment is a path where you pull the strings for your own well-being. It is a way of living in which you make tuned-in choices, according to your internal guidance system. If you’re reading this, something inside you is already stirring toward change. This is your own body wisdom calling you home.
Start with the foundation – our body’s innate wisdom. Our body is constantly communicating through cues, signals, and messages. From our cellular needs to our gut instincts, we each have an internal feedback system that can guide everything from screen and food choices to life decisions. Many of us learned to override these signals early in life. “Finish your plate.” “Sit still.” “Don’t be so sensitive.” These well-meaning instructions taught us to ignore our body’s feedback in favor of external rules.

The Practice: Simple Body Awareness

Start with simple body awareness around food and water. Notice when you drink treated restaurant water – does your mouth constrict and say no? Have you experienced drinking fresh spring water and felt your body’s visceral yes instinct? This is a simple but profound way to start listening to your body’s feedback. Pay attention to the subtle sensations in your mouth and throat. Your body knows the difference, and it will tell you if you are willing to listen.
Your turn: Start paying attention to your body’s instinctual yes/no signals. When your body says, “No, do not drink this water, eat this food, take this pill” – honor your instinct. When you think about hanging out with a friend and your energy contracts, consider changing your plans. Your body wisdom has been refined over millions of years of evolution. Trust it. Take a moment to appreciate that you’re already invested in this journey simply by reading these words. Your body has been waiting patiently for you to return to this conversation. Welcome home to your own inner wisdom. For the kids, and for you.
